Read about 2014 Photograph Camp here.
A few times a year I get the blissful opportunity to teach photography camp to middle school and high school students at Cary Academy. Aside from actually shooting clients, teaching is my favorite thing about being a photographer. It was a teacher at Cary Academy who first put a camera in my hands and said “see what you can do with this”. He taught me that I could be artistic without ever knowing how to paint, or draw, or sculpt. In an academically challenging school, film and photography classes were where I could shine. In every photography camp students are given the opportunity to shine too.
I believe the best photography instruction happens outside the classroom. It is the holy grail of photography instruction: The Field Trip.
We learned all about Shutter Speed while riding the carousel at Pullen Park! (My iphone Photo)
We practiced macro photography at the NC Farmer’s Market!
(Student Photo)
We practiced lighting by setting up our own Studio with lights!

We interviewed a local woman and documented her and her awesome Mini Cooper to practice shooting for a magazine!

We studied perspective at J Raulston Arboretum!

Most importantly, we learn how to be better photographers — and had fun doing it!
Announcing: Photography and Marketing Camp (March 4th – 8th) from 8:30 – 5:00. Cost $360. 6th – 9th grade.
This camp is for anyone who loves taking pictures and/or wants to take their photography to the next level. Forget the classroom, we’ll be taking field trips throughout the Triangle to learn and practice new photography skills. What could be better than learning shutter speed while riding a carousel? Perspective on a rock climbing wall? Macro photography at the Farmer’s Market? Composition at the Arboretum? We’ll even set up our own Studio using off-camera lighting. In addition to our out-of-the-box field trips we’ll be learning more about shooting for a magazine, editing your pictures, blogging and marketing with your masterpieces. We’ll even set up our own Gallery Show! You’ll be learning from a professional photographer and Cary Academy Alumni (who LOVES teaching kids!) Teresa Porter, of My Friend Teresa Photography. Campers must have daily access to a camera for this camp.
If you’d like to see what courses I am currently teaching at Cary Academy you can view information on Enrichment Programs (evening classes and Cary Academy Trimester Break Camps) or get registered for my summer camp at Summer Quest. Registration opens mid-February.
