A Yearly Tradition in Family Photography
One of the best parts of being a family photographer is having the chance to document families year after year, and to celebrate their highlights that year. We hold on to their stories and memories and we treasure those entrusted to us. It has been so special to work with The Cook Family to capture their love. Every session with them has been a chance to celebrate who they are as a family we have loved turning that into beautiful family portraits. Each year they bring creative new ideas, styles, and energy (and we are here for it!), and each session adds another chapter to their family story. Their family portraits highlight the beauty of capturing milestones and the everyday love that ties a family together through the years.
A gorgeous downtown Raleigh penthouse brought a sense of modern elegance to the Cook Family’s 2022 family portraits. Floor-to-ceiling windows, Oak City views, and a black tie look created a refined atmosphere that matched the energy of this session.
2022: A Glamorous Take on Family Portraits in Raleigh
Looking back over the later years in the Cook Family’s photography journey, in 2022, they wanted to dress up and go all-out for an elegant family portrait session and we sourced the perfect location – a stunning a downtown Raleigh penthouse with iconic views of the Oak City. Dressed in black-tie attire, they embraced glamour and sophistication while we photographed them against the city skyline. These family portraits in Raleigh felt cinematic and refined. We created family photography that was tailored to them and their vision for their family portraits that year. We loved celebrating their creativity and sense of fun. The Cooks’ family photography session in 2023 was all about the warm colors, lush greenery and easy movement of fall. A soft color palette, warm sweaters, gentle trails, and golden leaves set the tone for a relaxed afternoon together.
Fall Family Pictures in 2023
The following year, the Cooks decided on a completely different mood that contrasted beautifully with the glamour of their first family portrait session. For 2023, their family photography session took place in a park local to where they live, at the peak of fall color in North Carolina. Surrounded by golden leaves, warm sweaters, and their sweet dog, this session captured the warm, natural side of their family. These fall family pictures showed the playful and relaxed atmosphere that makes this family so special, and the location gave an authentic look at the area they call home. The laughter, the crisp air, and the loyal pup at their daughter’s side all made for portraits that gave a timeless coziness with a touch of hometown charm.
One of our favorite moments from our 2024 family portrait session at the Historic Magnolia House Inn came during the getting-ready moments. Matching robes, soft pink rooms, and quiet mother-daughter time created some of the sweetest images of the day. The charm of the Inn added a cozy backdrop while we captured the in-between moments that show their closeness.
2024: Family Photography at the Historic Magnolia House Inn
Most recently, the Cook family brought us to the Historic Magnolia House Inn in Greensboro, NC for their 2024 portraits. Built in 1889, the Magnolia House Inn is one of the city’s oldest remaining Queen Anne–style homes and a landmark tied to Greensboro’s textile-era history. It later became a welcoming stop for Black travelers during segregation as one of the few local hotels listed in the Green Book. Musicians, athletes, and community leaders gathered there, which created a space that supported connection, creativity, and resilience within the Black community. Its rich interiors and character-filled spaces provided a perfect backdrop for refined and intimate family portraits.
One of our favorite parts of this session was capturing Allyson and her daughter getting ready together in matching robes, a special mother-daughter moment that set the tone for the entire day. The Magnolia House Inn offered room after room of beautiful light and refined style, which helped to shape the look and feel of their portraits in such a natural way. We loved gathering the whole family together to create images that blended their connection with sophistication. From the rich emerald walls and velvet textures of the sitting room to the bright, airy café nook where the three of them shared a quiet moment, the Cook family glowed in their portraits. We loved that their daughter has become so comfortable in front of the camera through the years and she moved effortlessly between playful expressions and we guided with picture-perfect poses. The variety of spaces at the venue added interest to this family photography and versatility in the final collection. The finished portraits carried a sense of elegance, steeped in history, cultural signifcance and storytelling. These family pictures reflected the connection and steadiness that define the Cook family, captured through clean styling, thoughtful color palettes, and the relaxed way they settled into each scene.
For their 2024 family photography session at the Historic Magnolia House Inn, the Cook family embraced the Inn’s rich textures and deep colors. White outfits against bold jewel-toned rooms brought a contrasting, timeless feel to their portraits.

Photographing the Cooks every year is a nothing short of a privilege. Each session has given us the chance to watch their daughter grow and change before our eyes and we love creating memories that they can look back on when she is all grown up. Family photography gives the opportunity to create a pictoral legacy, for preserving these fleeting seasons of life. From glamorous sessions to fall family pictures in the park and refined portraits in historic spaces, their milestones have been captured in beautiful portraits that will be cherished for generations.
