Natalie M (Cary High School, Class of 2021) knew she wanted a senior portraits Cary session that would capture this memorable time in her life, beyond just standard yearbook photos. We were thrilled to meet this talented senior and create her custom senior portraits Cary session.
Senior Portraits Cary: Hidden graffiti, a Diner, and downtown Cary
We met with Natalie at our downtown Cary studio during the summer to plan her Senior Portraits Cary. We learned that she often stars in theater and chorus productions and is part of improv and acapella groups. She made honor’s chorus for the state. What talent! Her friends say she is the group ‘therapist’ and is spontaneous and funny. Her mom thinks she is creative, determined, confident, and a quiet leader.
For her senior portrait session, Natalie liked a bohemian vibe mixed with some urban backdrops. She loved the idea of our ‘secret’ abandoned places with hidden graffiti, and also wanted some portraits in Downtown Cary (which is especially meaningful to her family). We scheduled her sessions and clothing design meeting and couldn’t wait to get started!
For the first session, Natalie came to the studio for hair and make-up services by our resident artist, Denise. The whole team then travelled to our ‘secret’ location with amazing graffiti. There were some crazy rainstorms on the way to there, but we knew if we could just get there we would be ‘inside’. Our scary walk up four flights of steep metal stairs (in the rain) felt crazy, but it was worth every step. A favorite moment was her mom helping us spray the smoke and hold the light.
Another session started at our studio with hair and make up services again. If you love downtown Cary like Natalie’s family does (they own the Humble Pig food truck), you know the fountain is one of our most iconic Downtown Cary locations. We used the beautiful evening light to photograph around the Cary Arts Center (we love those steps!) and the fountain. And we captured some special family moments with Natalie’s little sister.
Then we took a break and ate together at The Shiny Diner. With our special access to The Shiny Diner after closing, we unscrewed all the light bulbs, turned off the overhead lights, and set up a scene right out of the 50’s. Natalie is an amazing singer and she looked flawless in front of the juke box with our vintage silver microphone.

Natalie and her family returned to the studio a few weeks later to watch the behind-the-scenes video and a slideshow of all her portraits. Natalie selected a group of her favorite images (it was hard to choose!) to share with family and friends.
We loved working with Natlie and her family to capture this memorable time in her life and grant her wish to have more than ‘basic’ yearbook portraits!
